Remembering we are a working class led co-op

'People like you don't start housing co-ops'
Over the last year, the make up of the co-op changed quite dramatically, and so did the class dynamics. It was a hard thing to understand and discuss and made for some sticky conversations, but we came back to the phrase that we'd been told when we first started this whole thing - the unintentional or perhaps entirely intentional challenge - that we as working class people with no assets or family wealth coming from the poor areas we grew up in, could not make our own housing happen.
We absolutely have to stick to fighting this negative belief. Working class people are people, we have skills, intellect, intuition, we are expert budgeters, we are resilient. We know what it's like to have so little, the prolonged stress of it, and understand the needs of those worse affected in a housing crisis. We absolutely must try to stick to this principle.
